Depok, West Java, Aug 7 (Antaranews Megapolitan) - Following loss of at least 99 lives and devastation caused by Sunday evening's powerful magnitude-7 earthquake, rocking Lombok and Sumbawa Islands, West Nusa Tenggara, University of Indonesia (UI) has sent seven relief teams to Lombok.

The teams will map out the initial location of the disaster and assisting medical services by joining the PAPDI Team (Indonesian Internal Medicine Specialist Association) of Lombok Branch.

"This is part of our efforts to respond quickly to the disaster in Lombok, which has claimed up to 99 people," Director of the Directorate of Research and Community Service at UI Prof. Heri Hermansyah remarked here on Tuesday.

After the assessment team departed to observe the location of the disaster and map out the need for assistance, he revealed that another big team will depart from the UI campus on August 10, 2018.

The UI Earthquake Care Team in Lombok is coordinated by the Directorate of Research & Community Service of the university.

The UI Peduli team will focus on two clusters that are Health Clusters related to medical services and Refugee and Protection Clusters related to sanitation and clean water, psycho-social services, and identification of buildings that are still standing.

UI Peduli has also sent general practitioners and internal medicine specialists as well as UI Student Regiment teams, with qualifications, ready for the emergency response phase.

The earthquake has reportedly, so far, claimed some 99 lives, injured some 209 others, damaged thousands of houses, and displaced tens of thousands of people.

"This is temporary data. The figure is likely to increase, as the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) is conducting data collection," Head of the agency's Data, Information, and Public Relations Center, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, stated on Monday.

He noted that some had also died of shock, suffering a stroke after the earthquake struck.

All those confirmed dead in the earthquake will receive Rp15 million as compensation from the Ministry of Social Affairs. Those injured will receive as much as Rp2.5 million.

The quake, which had rattled the two islands at 6:46 p.m. local time on Sunday, was centered at 8.3 degrees southern latitude and 116.48 degrees eastern longitude, and at a depth of 15 kilometers.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency had issued a tsunami early warning shortly after the quake and lifted it at 9:25 p.m. local time on Sunday.
