Depok, W Java, June 10 (Antara Megapolitan) - Muhaimin Iskandar, chairman of the Board of Supervisors of Farmers and Fishermen Awakening Movement (Gerbang Tani), stated that a moratorium was badly needed for the development of modern retail markets in big cities.

Iskandar, who is concurrently the general chairman of the National Awakening Party (PKB), stressed on the importance of moratorium for the modern retail markets development because the mushrooming (of retail markets) threaten the existence of traditional markets.

"We must protect the traditional markets because the modern retails stand arbitrarily and without calculating the distance," Muhaimin stated, on the sidelines of his impromptu visit at the Pasar Agung Depok 2 on Saturday.

Hence (with the moratorium), Muhaimin expressed hope that the traditional markets have a chance to grow and improve.

"After the traditional markets evolve by improving their mechanism and adequate facilities, then we see the proper zoning distance between traditional and modern markets," he disclosed.

According to him, (the government) should arrange the territory and the distance between a modern retail and a traditional market should be appropriate, so that the traders and consumers would be protected.

"The local government should set up zoning, not arbitrarily give permission, especially without calculating the factor of sales and purchasing zone," he reminded.

Muhaimin further stated that the complaint of the traditional traders are, among others, about the infrastructure facilities, security guard by thugs that is still emerging, and also the less supply of goods.

"We should make rules that favor the traditional markets to support and sustain the growth of these traditional merchants," he added.
